Directed by Rebecca Hall, English, 98 minutes, USA, 2021
In anticipation of Northeastern University and the Women Take the Reel film festival's panel discussion on Passing, directed by Rebecca Hall, based on the novel by Nella Larsen, join the Northeastern WGSS program for a virtual screening of the film on Netflix on Friday, March 4 at 7:30 pm ET.
Passing is a novel by American author Nella Larsen, first published in 1929. Set primarily in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in the 1920s, the story centers on the reunion of two childhood friends—Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield—and their increasing fascination with each other's lives. The film is based on the novel and is directed by Rebecca Hall, and stars Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson.
Northeastern will host a conversation with Professor Carla Kaplan (Northeastern University Davis Distinguished Professor of American Literature; Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Professor of Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies at Northeastern University) and Professor Allyson Hobbs (Stanford University, Associate Professor of History, Director of African and African American Studies, Kleinheinz Family University Fellow in Undergraduate Education) to follow up the screening on Monday, March 7 at 6:00 pm ET. The dialogue will address the phenomenon of passing and themes of race, gender, and belonging. This event is part of the Women Take the Reel Film Festival (sponsored by the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality) and is open to the public. Register via Eventbrite to reserve your spot in that webinar.
Boston College will host an additional conversation about “Passing” as part of the WTTR film festival on Tuesday, March 15th.
